All power to any suggestion that Australian students should become better educated especially in languages. However I have one point to make: I understand that millions of Indians and Chinese currently are learning English. Perhaps we should import some of these to teach the children in our schools the basics of the English language,.
The Indians I have dealt with definitely use English in a more knowledgeable way than we do – they actually understand the make-up of the language. And I have no doubt that with their usual efficiency the Chinese students will “attack” learning English from the bottom up and will really understand it. Which is more than our current curriculum does – no basics, no breakup into parts of sentences, etc. etc.
