What’s in a Date?

When is a date not a date? The Enmore Theatre (the old Enmore Hoyts) is showing a date on its facade “Vaudeville since 1908” and after enquiries among my family I am really puzzled. My family has lived in the area since about 1940 and, of course, often attended the old Enmore Hoyts to see “movies”… never “Vaudeville.
So how true is “Vaudeville since 1908”. We were all intrigued to think that perhaps we were actually seeing vaudeville with all its then connotations of spice and not the films of the day.
So I ask – when is a date not a date but wishful thinking?
