I feel so dispirited! Talking to a young woman of ethnic background recently about the marvellous work of the various volunteers in this country and she expressed the opinion that my generation (two away from hers) would be the last to have the volunteer ethos.
I couldn’t help disagreeing, but she said the younger generations do not have the same ideas. They simply do not think about volunteering. In her opinion we wouldn’t see volunteers such as Lifesavers, Fire fighters, football canteen workers, school canteen workers, etc. because her generation simply did not think this way and she regretted this.
I do hope readers will disagree with this view with some proof that the younger generations, especially of different ethnic backgrounds, will “come to the party” and take up the load of volunteering.
For my peace of mind I do hope so.
