A plebiscite for a Republic

“Why shouldn’t we have a head of state full time on the job and with powers and responsibilities determined by the people of today” – Geoff Gallop asks this pertinent question on the Comment page of SMH January 3. Is there a petition out there for those of us that support the idea of a plebiscite to ask simply “do we want a Republic? Yes or No”.
The Australian disease of procrastination says that we should wait for this Queen to die before moving: if she dies on 28th Feb do we start moving on 1st March or do we set in motion the organisation required to ask the question “do we want a Republic? Yes/No” well before QE2 dies.
