“Better the Real World” News Review, SMH Feb 22 – I hate to say it but a correspondent to the SMH Letters was all upside down. “Most Christians send their children to state schools as they represent a broad cross section of society” is not really true. Most people – not just Christians – send their children to state schools to get the most out of the system – it’s as near as you can get to “free”. Even in well-heeled suburbs with parents on very good salaries – it’s a way to spend less money.
The correspondent also didn’t take into account various other reasons for people to use the State school system, such as religious faith, discipline, etc. And any observer will know that the independent schools represent a very broad spectrum of society.
And incidentally I resent people with excellent income using taxpayer money by using the state school system. They should be obliged to pay more towards the cost of their children’s education than is expected of them at the local state school.
