Freedom of Speech

“Section 18C just the start of conversation on free speech” – Tim Wilson, Comment 7 August in Australian media..
I looked at the picture of Tim Wilson, Australia’s Human Rights Commissioner and thought “he has an open face. Looks young for the job but that may be good” and then I read his boxed comment “We can trust individuals to exercise reason and judgment and that is a good thing” and my confidence collapsed in a shuddering heap. He is too naive for his or our good if he believes what he has just written: that we can trust individuals to exercise reason and judgment. What century is he in? Does he read news such as ICAC’s investigations.
Then I had another thought: “there is an old adage you are known by the company you keep”, and I remembered the company Tim seems to keep and the arguments I have heard on TV forums he seems to be on so often. Look at the company he keeps and the naivety he displays now.
We need a worldly wise, unbiased apolitical person as Australia’s Human Rights Comm. Don’t we?
