I read a comment recently – “the USA doesn’t have allies – they have interests”
Two points raised by the current obeisance by an Australian PM (the latest) to the President of USA: Malcolm, Australians do not put hand-on-heart to show respect – that is so American.
When John Howard was walking Australian style , hands by his side, besides George W, taking the salute – – he looked over at G.W, saw his hand on heart and promptly placed his hand on his heart – and so it continues even until this day.
And the latest out of Pres Trump: Teachers with guns – ask Tim Fischer. He really put the case that this would mean teachers would be the first and immediate targets of a gunman should this come in.
My comment: What good will it do? – Make a battleground of every school…shoot-outs between gunmen, teachers, and probably kids with guns. Who wants that?
Malcolm: Please…please…please be careful in your dealings re the Infrastructure Scheme being discussed in the USA now.
Nobody has ever called Joe Hockey a brain, or an astute treasurer so if he is pushing this Infrastructure Scheme for us to join with the USA, please beware of the “sharks” in the USA. We seem usually to come out of trade dealings with the USA behind the eight ball. Don’t be flattered Malcolm and Joe – look twice at any scheme with the USA that would involve us in money and/or trade and then …walk away. The robber barons of America (Vanderbilts, etc.) did not make their money and build their empires out of railways, etc. by giving away anything at all…and we usually seem to come out of deals with the USA with the wrong end of a rotten stick.
In any other forum in the world a vote of 128 against (Trump’s declaration of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital) – with just 9 for the declaration and 35 abstentions (128-9) would carry the vote. But not in the UN and not with the USA/Trump in full cry.
I feel that I am seeing a reminder of 1933 and A Hitler trampling on the laws of the country, with Trump’s threats to refuse funding to any who oppose him.
Where are we headed? where is the USA headed? I can see where we are headed – anywhere the USA takes us.
Poor WikiLeaks whistleblower Chelsea Manning – released from gaol after seven years (SMH 18 May) for doing much the same thing – disclosure of intelligence matter – as the President of the USA. But Donald will tough it out and build up his ego without doing time in any form.
Is this how Donald Trump conducted his business interests prior to becoming President of the USA? Lies, obfuscation, mind-boggling mind-switches, vindictive staff relations, constant staff turnover…how on earth did he become a billionaire. Oh yes! He confused and bewildered his business opponents but for how long will this system work in diplomatic/political circles.
Will someone remind me – what were Nixon and Clinton taken to task for – impeached for?
So, finally, there may be some light let into the fog that has blocked off the RSL and its activities for many years.
I have no knowledge of the alleged financial problems but I am well aware of the stuck-in-the-past (WW1) attitude of the RSL as we know it. I have accumulated a file inches thick over the past few years asking for recognition of WW2 servicemen and particularly New Guinea but – alas RSL thoughts start and end with The Western Front and Gallipoli and the March. To my requests that more recognition be given to activities in WW2 such as a Day for those activities especially in New Guinea, I have had a standard reply: Änzac Day covers all servicemen, to which I have replied “ask any child in the street what Anzac (Day) means and they will tell you Gallipoli”. They don’t even think about North Africa, Greece, Crete, Syria and finally, and so importantly regarding the possible invasion of Australia – New Guinea.
It was salt on the wounds to hear an American Admiral on ship celebrating The Battle of the Coral Sea refer to heading off the invasion of Australia…a history that local historians and the RSL have been trying to re-write for over 65 years selling the fact that there was no suggestion of a possible invasion.. Amazing – the Japanese had fought from their islands right down through SE Asia and then New Guinea – up and down the Owen Stanley Ranges – to….what? sit in Port Moresby – well that’s what the RSL and local historians would have us believe but obviously the American Navy doesn’t think that.
So – good on the investigators – they may bring the RSL up to date and into the 21st century.
